The Spirit of Haida Gwaii. Spirit of Haida Gwaii, Bill Reid's largest and most complex sculpture, is displayed at the river end of the Grand Hall.As if heading for the shoreline of the coastal village, the Spirit of Haida Gwaii represents a Haida canoe crammed with a bewildering variety of paddlers and passengers.The white sculpture is the original plaster pattern used to cast the bronze.

Dogfish Woman and Bear Mother are elements taken from the monumental sculpture The Sprit of Haida Gwaii, and were created as stand alone sculptures. The heads were selected by the artist to be cast in bronze as sculpture editions of nine and exhibited for sale at the Bushlen Mowat Galllery in Vancouver in 1993/96.

Thousands of 2.54 cm-wide strips of float glass were cut and assembled to enable the various tints that create a seascape in which large waves are rolling towards the viewer and an imaginary shore and to relate, symbiotically, with Bill Reid's monumental sculpture The Spirit of the Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe.

His most famous work is the Spirit of Haida Gwaii, a large sculpture of a canoe overflowing with wondrous creatures. He made two of these, one in black is at the Canadian embassy in Washington, DC; a jade-green one is at the Vancouver International Airport, and is the most visited aboriginal art piece in North America.

Spirit of Haida Gwaii is the largest, most complex, and best known of Bill Reid's sculptures. The work depicts a canoe filled with thirteen entangled ethereal beings, the majority of whom are non-human and of mythical Haida origin: the Raven (Xhuuya), the Wolf, the Eagle, the Frog, the Bear Family, the Beaver, the Dogfish Mother, and the Mouse Woman (Quaganjaat).
